Should the Atlanta Hawks be concerned with Tim Hardaway's struggles during the preseason?

The Atlanta Hawks decision to trade the 19th pick in the 2015 Draft to the New York Knicks for Tim Hardaway Jr. is one of the more controversial moves the team made over the offseason. While Mike Budenholzer and Wes Wilcox have identified Hardaway as a player they have had their eyes on for some time, his progress has been a bit slow so far this preseason.

Hardaway came into Wednesday's game just 6-25 from the field. He saw extended minutes against the Heat but was just 2-8 from the field finishing with seven points and six rebounds. As you can see, he has struggled to make shots all over the floor.

Prior to the preseason, Hardaway talked about playing in the Hawks' system after running the triangle in New York. He talked about how the Triangle was always on your mind and that one of the biggest differences in Atlanta was the free flowing nature on offense. While that is true, there are concepts and reads that players must make in Budenholzer's system and Hardaway currently looks like a player that is thinking a bit too much rather than simply reacting.

Despite his struggles, Hardaway looks like a good bet to see minutes in Atlanta's rotation once the regular season begins. As was mentioned earlier, the Hawks paid a heavy price to acquire him so he will likely get ample opportunities to prove he can do the job.

Atlanta took a similar tact with Thabo Sefolosha, who struggled out of the gate last season. Sefolosha was shooting just 37 percent from the field and was just 2-for-20 from three-point range through November. The coaching staff stuck with him, and he upped those percentages to 44 percent shooting in December while knocking down 37 percent of his long-range attempts.

Atlanta's other major wing acquisition Justin Holiday has also struggled going 2-for-17 from the field in four preseason games.

So expect the Hawks to show patience with Hardaway and to continue to bring him along slowly even while he is struggling offensively. To his credit, Atlanta has performed well defensively during the preseason with him on the floor. IIf that carries over into the regular season, then it will be easier to live with some of the growing pains offensively.

The Hawks are no longer perfect in the preseason, as the home team suffered a 101-92 defeat on Sunday evening.

The streak is over.

Okay, that is a severely overdramatic lede, but the Atlanta Hawks suffered their first defeat of the preseason on Sunday evening, falling to the Miami Heat by a final score of 101-92. Let the panic begin.

The first half was, unquestionably, a good one for the home team. The Hawks scored 51 points on 42 field goal attempts, and while that isn't excellent by any stretch, the defense was strong in holding Miami to just 35% from the floor and 24% from three-point range. In addition, it was nice to see Kyle Korver (10 points, 2-2 3-PT in the half) get things going in the first 24 minutes, and in general, Atlanta looked crisp on both ends when attempting to reconcile what happens in preseason.

However, after the break, things were not quite as swell. Miami elected to play the second half without their starting group, but it certainly did not matter in the third quarter, as the Heat immediately erased what was an eight-point halftime deficit while turning it into a seven-point advantage by the end of the third quarter. Because much of the damage came against something resembling Atlanta's starting group, there was some cause for alarm (especially with 10 turnovers in the quarter), but at the same time, a preseason quarter is almost never cause for alarm.

With the third quarter as the impetus, the Heat were able to hold off the Hawks from ever making a serious second-half challenge. To be fair, it was a half played largely by backups (exclusively on the Miami side), and Mike Budenholzer seemed reticent to bring the starters back to make a late "charge". On the bright side, Mike Scott exploded for a 19-point, 8-rebound night in just 24 minutes, and that made up from so-so performances elsewhere on the bench.

Personnel wise, the Hawks held back Tiago Splitter and Dennis Schröder from action for rest purposes, but the biggest story may have been the absence of Justin Holiday. Holiday did not appear at any point during the game, and with players like Lamar Patterson receiving extended time, that is a story line worth monitoring, even if it was a planned absence that simply went unpublicized.

The Hawks will complete their home preseason slate with a match-up against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night, with the preseason finale in Detroit to come on Friday. Stay tuned.

The Hawks continue their home preseason slate with a match-up against the Miami Heat on Sunday evening.

The Atlanta Hawks are the defending Southeast Division champions, but many have predicted that the team will be unable to claim that distinction in back-to-back seasons. The reason? Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat.

On Sunday evening, the public will get an advanced look at what could be a back-and-forth battle for division supremacy this season, as the Heat visit Atlanta for a preseason contest. To be fair, there isn't exactly a lot of pressure on either side on this day, but the Hawks are playing quite well on the way to a 4-0 start, and it will be interesting to see what transpires.

As always in the preseason, every caveat should be put forth with regard to lineups until game time. The Hawks elected to rest Paul Millsap, Jeff Teague and Kent Bazemore on Friday night, and we will keep an eye on personnel closer to game time. Regardless, there will be basketball action flowing on Sunday evening and we will be here. Stay tuned throughout the day.
