Atlanta switched up its pick and roll coverages in Game 1 in an effort to keep the ball in a struggling Roy Hibbert's hands.

There are many different ways to defend the pick and roll and the Atlanta Hawks switched up their coverage of Roy Hibbert in the second half of Saturday's Game 1 victory. Hibbert's struggles of late have been well chronicled and no doubt played a part in Atlanta's selection of this particular coverage.

Normally against a talented big man like Hibbert, a team would be more concerned with him as a scoring threat. Here the Hawks are trusting their help defenders to be able to defend Hibbert well enough.

As you can see above, Pero Antic shows hard on Hibbert's screen and traps the ball handler George Hill. Hibbert counters as he should by slipping the screen. Facing a trap, Hill has no choice but to dump the ball inside.

Here Kyle Korver is a bit late rotating over and gets whistled for the foul. As you can see in the picture, Paul Millsap is also in the area in help position. When Hibbert is going well the Hawks probably wouldn't have been willing to give him this much room in the paint but with him struggling they were looking to keep the ball in his hands. Hibbert missed both free throws following this possession.

Here is a nearly identical situation that occurred a few minutes later. The Hawks again trap Hill and force him to give up the ball.

Hibbert slips the screen but this time Atlanta's help defense is a step quicker into position. Hibbert passes up the opportunity for a short hook or jump shot over Millsap and instead dips his shoulder and is called for the offensive foul.

Again the Hawks are helping to funnel the ball to Hibbert even if it means covering him with a much smaller defender. Hibbert's struggles and indecisiveness prevented the Pacers from capitalizing.

The playoffs are a chess match between coaching staffs and it will be interesting to see what sort of adjustments both teams make heading into Game 2. Hibbert scored a couple of baskets late and finished with eight points and eight rebounds but was hardly a factor. Frank Vogel has to figure out a way to get Hibbert back on track or must explore going smaller in an effort to more effectively matchup with the Hawks.

The Indiana Pacers are mulling changes in advance of their Game 2 matchup with the Atlanta Hawks.

After being torched by Jeff Teague in two straight matchups, the Indiana Pacers are considering changes when they take the floor for Game 2 on Tuesday night. A report by the Associated Press on Sunday states that theĀ Pacers are considering having Paul George guard Teague at some point in Game 2.

George said he and coach Frank Vogel discussed the defensive assignment Sunday, though Vogel declined to confirm the move or any other changes he might make now that the top-seeded Pacers trail Atlanta 1-0 in the first-round series.

George told reporters that he is up for the challenge and wouldn't mind guarding Teague to "give him another look."

''I would love to, just to change it up a little bit and give him a different look,''

If George switches over to Teague then that will force George Hill or C.J. Watson to guard either Kyle Korver or DeMarre Carroll. George primarily shadowed Korver in Game 1 and helped harass him into a 5-of-12 shooting night including 2-of-7 from three-point range.

The NBA Playoffs began on Saturday and three road teams came away with Game 1 wins.

The Atlanta Hawks grabbed an improbable 101-93 win in Game 1 at Indiana on Saturday but they weren't the only road team to find success.
Jeff Teague set a playoff career-high with 28 points as the Atlanta Hawks steal Game 1 from the Indiana Pacers.

For Atlanta things couldn't have gone any better. For the Pacers this may be rock bottom. Atlanta used a 16-2 run in the first quarter to grab an early lead and then delivered the knockout punch in the third quarter of a 101-93 win in Game 1 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The importance of Jeff Teague to Atlanta's success has been mentioned over and over but it was on no better display than in Game 1 Saturday night. Teague torched the Pacers for 28 points and five assists going 9-19 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. More importantly, it was his penetration off the dribble that forced Indiana's defense to rotate and thus provided space for Atlanta's shooters.

"I just wanted to be aggressive," said Teague. "We know they're a good defensive team with a lot of length. We just wanted to attack, stay aggressive and hit the open guy. We've got a lot of shot-makers. We know they are a long team who likes to clog the paint. But we want to stretch the floor against them."

Atlanta did just that as they connected on 11-30 three-point attempts. Counting the regular season, the Hawks have made at least 10 three-pointers in all three wins against the Pacers.

To get enough space against a good defensive team like Indiana Atlanta must penetrate and that starts and ends with Teague. A look at his shot chart reveals just how much time he spent in the paint in Game 1.

Shot charts like this have become much more of the norm for Teague down the stretch of the season as he has begun to play much more down hill in Atlanta's pick and roll attack. At times Atlanta used an alignment that featured all five players on the perimeter and just dared the Pacers to help. Often when they tried to help it was too late as Teague simply blew past his defender for a layup.

"All year, we've encouraged Jeff to be aggressive," Budenholzer said. "When he's aggressive, it just creates opportunities for himself and opportunities for his teammates."

Teague's teammates took advantage of those opportunities. Paul Millsap struggled all season against the Pacers but broke out in Game 1 with 25 points and eight rebounds. DeMarre Carroll logged a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and was 2-4 from three-point range. Kyle Korver added 12 points despite missing a number of good looks from deep. Atlanta outscored Indiana 30-16 in the third quarter with Teague and Millsap accounting for 27 of those 30 points.

As I mentioned earlier, things couldn't have went much better for Atlanta. The Pacers on the other hand continue to search for answers as their second half slump continued.

Indiana shot a respectable 42 percent from the field for the game and made nine three-pointers of their own. However, their vaunted defense was absent as Atlanta met little resistant. The Hawks also controlled the boards for much of the game despite being undersized. Indiana finished with a 46-42 edge but Atlanta finished with nine offensive boards and will likely take that scenario every time.

Following the game, the Pacers were quick to point out that its a long series and that there was still a lot of basketball to be played.

"It's frustrating. It's frustrating, but it's a long series," said Paul George. "It's just one game and that's the way we have to look at it."

Once they were down, Indiana didn't look like a team playing with much of a sense of urgency. In the lead up to Game 2, they will have to deal with much more of "what is wrong with Indiana" rather than "what did the Hawks do right in Game 1."

The Hawks understand that this still figures to be a long series but on Saturday night they did exactly what they needed to. They played loose and without pressure and took the fight straight to the Pacers. They showed Indiana that if they don't get their problems corrected that they can in fact win this series. That is the competitive spirit that Mike Budenholzer has been talking about all season long.

The Atlanta Hawks began their playoff journey with a vengeance on Saturday night, as they went into Indiana and generally out-played the Pacers to the tune of a 101-93 final score and a 1-0 series advantage.

Even with the late-season struggles of the Indiana Pacers, virtually no one was giving the Atlanta Hawks a legitimate chance to take game one and control of the series, but that is exactly what the road team did on Saturday night. The Hawks were aggressive and productive for the great majority of 48 minutes, and in the end, they emerged from the opener as the victors by a final margin of 101-93.

In the opening moments, it looked to be a bit ominous for the Hawks, as David West (on a dunk) and Roy Hibbert (on a left-handed hook) pulsed Indiana to a quick, 4-0 advantage. It wouldn't take long, though, for the Hawks to respond, as Atlanta turned a 7-2 deficit into an 18-9 advantage on the back of an impressive 16-2 spurt. Paul Millsap connected on a 4-point play in the midst of the run, and the Hawks were creating quality looks offensively thanks to a combination of penetration and ball movement.

The glass was an early point of emphasis for the Hawks as well, and it helped them grab a 6-point first quarter lead despite shooting "just" 45% from the floor in the first 12 minutes. Atlanta grabbed 12 of the first 16 available rebounds in the game, and finished the 1st quarter with a 15-7 advantage on the glass. The only black mark against the Hawks in the first was the buzzer-beating three by CJ Watson (continuing a bizarre streak of such a play against Atlanta), but unfortunately, that wasn't the end of the push from the Pacers.

Indy began the second quarter on the back of Lance Stephenson, and the Pacers swingman flashed to a 6-0 personal run that completed an 11-2 overall spurt (including the Watson three) to tie the game at 30 apiece. From there, the two teams played dead-even basketball, as they traded (small) runs throughout the remainder of the half, capped by a Kyle Korver tip-in (after a missed fast break lay-up by Jeff Teague) at the buzzer to even the score at 50-50 at the break.

It was a bit of an off half from a statistical perspective, as the Hawks parlayed their early advantage on the glass to a 26-18 margin that included 7 offensive boards. On the flip side, though, the Pacers shot 48% from the floor and 4-for-7 (57%) from 3-point range, and that efficiency was able to make up for the unexpected loss in rebounding for one of the league's best teams in that area. Still, Paul George (14 first half points) and Lance Stephenson (11 first half points) had it cooking at various points of the half, and escaping with a tie score, even in the midst of a 6-for-18 shooting performance from three, could be construed as a victory.

Fireworks began exploding out of the halftime break, and they didn't wait long. Paul Millsap took the ball to the rim for a 3-point play on the opening possession, and after a DeMarre Carroll three and a Jeff Teague jumper, the Hawks began with an 8-0 run to grab the early advantage. Following that, Pero Antic and Indiana's David West got into a bit of a mini-scuffle with 7:56 on the clock and the Hawks leading by only 4, and from there, things went violently in Atlanta's favor, beginning with Pero's unwillingness to back down.

After a David West lay-up to cut the lead to two, Jeff Teague unleashed the full arsenal on the Pacers. Teague scored 9 consecutive points to cap an 11-0 run that gave the Hawks a 71-58 lead with 4:46 to go in the 3rd, and including that push, Atlanta sprinted to a 20-4 spurt that was capped by a Paul Millsap three that saw the lead rise to 18 points. Teague was electric throughout the push, famously losing Evan Turner on a wicked crossover before hitting a three, and he finished with 13 in the period despite sitting for the final 2 minutes and 12 seconds.

Indiana scored only 14 points in the third quarter (to 30 from the Hawks), and on the plus side for the good guys, that impotence continued in the final period. Atlanta led by as many as 20 during the final period, and the advantage never dipped below 8 (which was in absolute garbage time) on the way to the final, stunning margin. It was a surreal scene down the stretch as Pacers fans streamed to the exits, but this was virtually the dream scenario for Atlanta fans.

In coordination with virtually all of our preview coverage, the Atlanta Hawks go as Jeff Teague goes, and on this night, he was utterly tremendous. The point guard finished with 28 points on 9 for 19 shooting (and 9 for 10 from the line) to go along with 5 assists, and when he was attacking the rim, the offense was flowing in a unique way. Obviously, this is a one-game sample size, but the best chance for the Hawks in the series is to get this version of Teague on a nightly basis, and the aggression he displayed was telling.

Paul Millsap wasn't bad himself with 25 points (7-17 FG, 9-11 FT) and 8 rebounds, while Kyle Korver (12 points despite a relatively rough shooting night) and DeMarre Carroll (double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds plus top-flight defense) were tremendous in their time on the floor. The bench wasn't nearly as effective as the starting unit (who saw double-digits to the positive in the single game plus-minus), but Shelvin Mack hit some enormous shots and Lou Williams provided solid contributions when he wasn't being isolated by Lance Stephenson on the other end.

As a team, the Hawks didn't need a lights-out shooting night to win, and that is incredibly encouraging. Pero Antic (who helped to neutralize Indy's big men with 8 points and 2 threes) was huge as anticipated, but Atlanta shot only 11 of 30 from 3-point distance, and while that is more than respectable, it is far from dominant. Furthermore, the Hawks generated only 13 (!) assists on their 33 field goals, and it was the break-even nature of the rebounding margin and the near flawless execution by guys like Teague that allowed the win to take place.

Now, the pundits will be aware of the Hawks in a brand new way, but the team still has an uphill climb against an opponent who was justifiably favored in the series. The two teams resume their battle on Tuesday night, but until then, it is back to the drawing board for the Pacers and a new infusion of confidence and life for Atlanta's bunch. Stay tuned.
