The Atlanta Hawks snapped a three game losing streak with a 124-101 win over the Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday night.

The timing couldn't have been any better for the Hawks who defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 124-101 Wednesday night to snap a three game losing streak. Atlanta needed a solid effort after three straight losses, two of which were very lethargic. The other one was a slim two point loss in San Antonio that spearheaded by the bench led by rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott.

Early on Wednesday night it looked like it might be another struggle for the Hawks. They fell behind by eight early, came back and took a 12 point lead in the second and watched the Sixers trim that to just two right before the half. Atlanta closed the half strong and led 59-51 at the half.

The Hawks took control in the second quarter as they clamped down defensively which helped to ignite the running game. Jeff Teague and Josh Smith went on the attack with Smith scoring 11 of his game-high 28 in the third.

Larry Drew preached effort and energy before the game and Al Horford agreed that it was difference in turning in a solid performance. "It was just a matter of us tightening up our defense" said Horford.

One encouraging sign was that while the starters turned in a great performance the bench also came up big in the win. Rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott shined for the second straight game and brought a scoring punch off the bench as they combined 38 points on 14-23 shooting. Drew praised his rookies following the game saying "I think John (Jenkins) and Mike (Scott) are really starting to find their niche."

In the grand scheme of things the Hawks are playing out the string with three games remaining in a long 82 game schedule. They are likely to end up as the sixth seed but still have a shot at finishing as high as fifth in the standings. Perhaps more importantly that positioning is this team's needing to focus as the post season approaches. For the last couple of weeks they haven't looked very engaged as a group.

That has led Drew to bemoaning their play in post game segments where he says that the Hawks can not afford to try and outscore opponents. He has often referred to the "blue collar" approach that he wants this team to take on. When they have then they have typically done well. However, finding consistency has been the issue for most of the season.

As up and down as things have been Wednesday's win improved Atlanta's record to 43-36 on the season with three games left to play. Prior to the season some of the most optimistic projections for this team had the Hawks in a 45-47 win range which is still within reach. The people making those projections weren't likely to have counted on Atlanta having to endure season ending injuries to Lou Williams and Zaza Pachulia.

Five different players scored in double figures as the Atlanta Hawks snapped a three game losing streak with a 124-101 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Early on it looked like things might be a struggle again for the Hawks who fell behind by as many as eight points in the first quarter. Atlanta closed the quarter by outscoring Philadelphia 20-10 over the last 4:40 to take a 29-27 lead.

Things see sawed back and forth early on in the second before the Hawks put together a run to lead 48-36 with 5:50 left in the half. The Sixers would answer behind the excellent play of Thaddeus Young whose hook shot trimmed the Hawks' lead to 51-49 with 2:12. Atlanta would finish the half with a 8-2 run to take a 59-51 lead into halftime.

Atlanta's running game came to life in the third quarter as they outscored the Sixers 34-22 to extend their lead to 93-73. Josh Smith scored 11 of his game-high 28 points in the third to help the Hawks to a big cushion.

The biggest scare for Atlanta fans in the second half came when the Hawks entered the fourth quarter with Kyle Korver's consecutive games streak with at least one three point basket still in jeopardy. Larry Drew was able to rest most of his starters in the fourth but did send Kyle back into the game to allow him to extend the streak to 71 straight games.

Smith's 28 came on 11-18 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a team high 12 rebounds and handed out four assists in just under 29 minutes of action. Philadelphia couldn't stop Smith on the block and he punished them in the third quarter by attacking the basket which is a great sign with the playoffs drawing near.

John Jenkins finished with 21 points as fellow rookie Mike Scott added 17. Jenkins was 8-13 from the floor including 3-4 from downtown and also handed out six assists. Scott hit 6-10 shots and grabbed eight rebounds. Al Horford added 16 points and nine boards while Jeff Teague finished with a double-double 13 points and 11 assists.

Thaddeus Young led Philadelphia with 28 points on a sizzling 14-20 shooting. He also grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Nick Young chipped in 19 off the bench while Dorell Wright added 15. Jrue Holiday finished with 12 points but it came on 4-14 shooting to go along with five turnovers.

The win pulls Atlanta to within a percentage point of the Chicago Bulls for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with three games left to play. The Bulls hold the tie breaker over the Hawks so Atlanta will need to pass them in the standings to move up to the fifth seed.

The Hawks will enjoy an off day on Thursday before returning to action on Friday at home against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Larry Drew and Doug Collins are two coaches that could be moving on from their current teams once the season ends.

Tonight's matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers will feature two head coaches whose futures are not set in stone. Its not out of the realm of possibility that both the Hawks and the Sixers will have new head coaches in place when the 2013-14 seasons open although each team has a different set of circumstances.

NBA.com's Sekou Smith included both Drew and Collins in his Tuesday column featuring coaches on the proverbial hot seat. Collins' situation in Philadelphia differs from Drew in that he has another year on his contract and that the Sixers organization want him back according to Smith. However, will Collins who has looked tired and frustrated in the wake of the Andrew Bynum trade have the energy to return to the sidelines for one more season? Only Collins knows but Smith thinks that the decision is Collins' to make.

His fourth year is already set. The Sixers' front office wants him back. And they'll need a steady, veteran coach to guide them out of the mess that the Bynum trade unleashed upon the organization and the fans. Collins is on thin ice only if he wants to be.

Larry Drew is in a much different place with the Hawks as he will wrap up a three-year stint as head coach when his contract expires at the end of the season. Drew has gone 226-126 with the Hawks and has guided the team into the post season in each of his three seasons. He was the darkest of dark horse candidates to replace Mike Woodson and has successfully taken the club from an iso heavy offensive approach to one of the highest assist teams in the league.

The question is whether or not Drew is part of new GM Danny Ferry's vision for the future of the franchise. On that subject Smith isn't so sure:

Bottom line? Drew was not Ferry's pick as coach. And if the Hawks are going to remake themselves this summer, it makes sense that Ferry will do so with his own pick as coach.

Along with a near total roster makeover, the head coaching decision will be one of the biggest storylines for the franchise heading into the offseason. If not Drew then who? Can Ferry lure a high profile coach to a Hawks team that might not be totally rebuilding but will definitely be retooling? Ferry could also look to give an unproven assistant coach a shot in a lot of the same way that Drew ended up with the job in the first place.

With four games left until the playoffs the Atlanta Hawks look to get back on track and snap a three game losing streak when they take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Atlanta Hawks are down to just four games remaining in the regular season but what seed they will be and who they will face in the first round of the playoffs still isn't settled. Atlanta can move to within percentage points of the Chicago Bulls for the fifth seed with a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Atlanta has lost three straight but is coming off of three straight off days. Some its regulars including Josh Smith and Al Horford received an extra day off after they sat out last Saturday's loss in San Antonio with nagging injuries. Atlanta could have everybody back in the lineup against Philadelphia including Devin Harris who has missed the last eight games with a toe injury.

The Sixers have taken two of the three meetings with the Hawks this season including a 101-90 win last Friday. Philadelphia jumped out to a 40-26 lead in the first quarter and cruised home to an easy victory. Three different Sixers finished with double-doubles led by Evan Turner's 24 points and 11 rebounds. Head coach Larry Drew certainly wasn't happy with his team's approach in the last meeting:

"The message is very clear. The last time we played this team, we did not show up," Drew said of facing the Sixers. "I actually had a meeting with Al, Josh and Jeff. Those three guys are the head of the snake for me. I need them playing at a very high level.

The Sixers haven't exactly been competitive of late as they followed up a 106-87 loss in Miami on Saturday with a 104-83 loss in Brooklyn on Tuesday. Whether they are struggling or not they certainly haven't been an easy out for the Hawks this season.
