The Atlanta Hawks struggle in the second half and fall to the Chicago Bulls 93-76

The Atlanta Hawks folded in the second half behind a suffocating defensive effort from the Chicago Bulls to lose 93-76. Chicago came into the game shorthanded and on a back-to-back, yet it was the Hawks that were a step slow to every loose ball and every key rebound in the second half.

Atlanta once again fell behind early but finished the second quarter with a flurry to take a 44-43 lead at the half. Josh Smith scored 16 of his 19 in the first half as the Hawks were able to get him inside and out on the fast break. However, the Bulls came out in the third quarter and clamped down outscoring Atlanta 26-16 in the quarter and 50-32 in the second half.

Atlanta shoots 39 percent from the floor, 32 percent from the three-point line and hits 53 percent of its free throws. Chicago won the battle on the boards 53-45 including an 18-12 advantage on the offensive glass. That performance was without Chicago's two leading rebounders in Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer. Mostly this loss was about Chicago's defense and a commitment to Tom Thibodeau's system. There was rarely a breakdown and when there was, the Bulls used a good hustle play to overcome it.

Smith's 19 led the Hawks and he added 13 rebounds and five assists but wasn't nearly the factor in the second half that he was in the first. Jeff Teague left the game in the first quarter with a hip contusion but returned to score 16 points and hand our four assists. Al Horford finished with 14 points and 12 boards but struggled to finish many plays at the rim and went 7-18 from the field. Kyle Korver added 10 points including three more threes. Korver extended his consecutive games streak with a three to 40.

Thibodeau again rode his starters and had good success. Four Chicago players played at least 40 minutes and three played more than 45. Luol Deng finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds while Taj Gibson was a monster on the interior with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Nate Robinson once again tortured the Hawks with 20 points, eight assists and three steals.

The Hawks get a couple of days to think about this loss before hitting the road for a tough matchup with the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.

The Atlanta Hawks announced on Saturday that they had signed guard Jannero Pargo to a second 10-day contract.

As was expected, the Hawks re-signed Jannero Pargo to a 10-day contract for the second time this season. At the end of 10 days, Atlanta will either have to sign Pargo for the remainder of the season or let him go.

Pargo has appeared in five games this season with the Hawks and is averaging 5.2 points on 40 percent shooting. He burst onto the scene in his debut with the team scoring 16 points in a win over Minnesota. Pargo spent the entire 2011-12 season with Atlanta and his familiarity with the players and Larry Drew's system helped earn him another shot.

"We had discussions about some other guys," Drew said. "But we felt it made sense to keep him here. He's been good for us. He knows the system and we are happy to have him back."

It will be interesting to see how the Hawks play it when Pargo's deal runs out the second time. By rule the Hawks will be forced to sign him for the remainder of the season if they want to keep him. The Hawks aren't likely to go with just Jeff Teague and Devin Harris as options at the point guard as it was Lou Williams' injury that prompted Pargo's signing in the first place.

The Atlanta Hawks look to avenge an earlier 98-57 beat down that was given to them by the Chicago Bulls.

The last time the Atlanta Hawks played the Chicago Bulls they set franchise lows for points in a half with 20 in a 98-57 loss. The two teams meet again on Saturday with Atlanta looking for a much better effort this time around.

The Hawks could be catching the Bulls at the right time. Chicago played just eight players in Friday's 93-89 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Joakim Noah, Kirk Hinrich and Carlos Boozer all sat out Friday's game with various injuries and all three are listed as questionable against the Hawks. Boozer has missed the last two with a hamstring injury and seems like the most likely to play of the three. Hinrich returned to Chicago with an elbow injury and Noah is dealing with a foot injury. Taj Gibson played all 48 minutes of Friday's game and Luol Deng played over 47 minutes so fatigue could be a factor on Saturday if the Bulls don't get some healthy bodies back.

Atlanta has been off since Wednesday's 93-92 comeback win over the Toronto Raptors. The Hawks are relatively healthy except for Zaza Pachulia who continues to deal with a sore Achilles. Pachulia sat out Friday's practice and is questionable for Saturday's game.

Chicago ranks seventh in the league in boards per game at 43.7 but Noah and Boozer account for 21.0 by themselves. The Hawks have struggled all season to keep opposing teams off the glass and are currently 26th in the league. The Hawks controlled the boards in the first matchup between the two teams out rebounding Chicago 45-31 in a 92-75 win back in December. However, Chicago owned a 59-39 advantage in the blowout win in January. The Hawks will need a good effort on the boards Saturday regardless if Noah and Boozer are able to play or not.
