The Hawks were able to get back in the win column and improve to 10-5 on the season against the Nuggets Wednesday night to give Josh Smith a win for his birthday. Smith gave the Hawks a double-double, along with frontcourt-mate Al Horford.

The Atlanta Hawks took down the Denver Nuggets 108-104 on national television behind a pair of double-doubles from their stars Josh Smith and Al Horford. Horford had 25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals in one of his best performances of the season. Josh Smith, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, had 16 points and 13 boards. Josh only played 13 minutes in the first half due to the great performances put forth by Zaza Pachulia and Ivan Johnson off the bench. Zaza led the Hawks with 11 points and six boards in the first half, with all his points and all but one of his rebounds coming in the second quarter. Al Horford added 10 points and six rebounds in the first half, and Devin Harris went 4-for-4 from the field for nine points.

The Nuggets were led by Ty Lawson in the first half, and really all game, as he scored 15 points and dropped five dimes on his way to a 32 points, seven assist, five steal performance. The Hawks gameplan was to keep the Nuggets off of the glass, especially on offense, turn the Nuggets over, and get out in transition. The Hawks accomplished all of those goals en route to the victory as they out-rebounded the mighty Nuggets 47-40 overall and 19-11 on offensive glass. Turned the Nuggets over 20 times for 20 points off turnovers, and were able to get 24 fast break points on 13 fast-break shots. Atlanta even shot 84.2% from the free throw line, including hitting their final five free throws of the game.

Despite executing their gameplan, Atlanta still gave up another seven-point fourth quarter lead and found themselves down 98-97 with 2:34 to play. The Hawks were able to close the game out behind Josh Smith and Lou Williams. Lou came in for Jeff Teague at the 2:52 mark in the fourth and quickly gave the Hawks an offensive spark. He penetrated the Nuggets defense, forcing them to foul, and hit all four of his free throws down the stretch. Williams finished the game with 16 points and six assists, while playing good defense down the stretch on the shifty Ty Lawson. Josh Smith had five points in the final three minutes off of a wide-open dunk from a Horford feed, and then picked up a loose ball and threw down a two-handed jam on Corey Brewer despite being fouled (shockingly made his free throw, nothing but net).

The Hawks iced the game with their defense as Lou Williams poked the ball away from Ty Lawson which was recovered by Devin Harris with 11 seconds to play. Atlanta improved their record to 10-5 on the season, while dropping the Nuggets to 9-10. Atlanta's record also improved to 9-2 when they either out-rebound opponents, or are out-rebounded by nine or fewer. After a poor effort against the Cavs on Friday night, Atlanta spent the last five days focusing on playing with energy, boxing out, and having all five players attack the glass.

Atlanta took a 55-51 lead into the half behind a solid performance from Zaza Pachulia off the bench with 11 points and six boards, and Al Horford's 10 points and six rebounds. Denver was led by Ty Lawson's 15 points and five assists and 14 points off the bench from Corey Brewer. Atlanta has handled the challenge on the glass out rebounding the Nuggets 24-21 and 9-4 on the offensive end (Denver came in top OR team in the NBA). Atlanta is shooting just 42.3% from the field, but has taken 14 more shots (and made 2 more) than the Nuggets, who are shooting 52.6% from the field. Atlanta is also doing well from the charity stripe making 7-of-8 from the line in the first half. The Hawks will need to continue being solid on the glass and focusing on keeping Faried, Mozgov, and McGee off the offensive glass (1 combined OR for those 3). Atlanta has also done well to force turnovers, causing 13 and scoring 12 points off those turnovers.

The Atlanta Hawks will send out a small lineup of Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, DeShawn Stevenson, Josh Smith, and Al Horford against the length of the Denver Nuggets. Denver will start Ty Lawson, Andre Iguodala, Danilo Gallinari, Kenneth Faried, and Timofey Mozgov. Aside from the 5-11 Lawson, every player in the Nuggets lineup is over 6-6 and will create a number of mismatches defensively for the Hawks, but Atlanta will hope to create their own mismatches by using their speed. Atlanta should look to the pick-and-roll to make Mozgov move away from the rim. Expect Al Horford to try and take advantage of Mozgov's lack of speed by rolling hard and also trying to take him off the dribble when in the high post and away from the basket.

Devin Harris has a tough task with Iguodala, one of the top on-ball defenders in the league, but lately Harris has been used mostly as a perimeter shooter and floor spacer in the half-court, his best effect has come in transition. Atlanta will need to push the pace against the slower, longer Nuggets, while being relatively strong on the glass. Atlanta is 8-2 when they keep their opponent from out rebounding them by more than nine (1-3 when out-rebounded by 10+). The Nuggets dominate on the offensive glass and lead the league in that category, so the onus will be on every player to box out and ensure they limit the Nuggets to one shot per offensive trip.

Korver's availability for tonight's game wasn't a certainty because of a lingering back issue that had him out of practice again on Monday and Tuesday. Larry Drew didn't announce a starting lineup for tonight's game at this morning's shootaround and was still toying with the idea of going small even with Denver's size along the front line.

Without Korver, Drew could use this opportunity to get Anthony Morrow some extra minutes at both the shooting guard and small forward positions. Korver is averaging 10.8 points per game while hitting 42 percent of his three-point attempts.

Peachtree Hoops would like to congratulate the Korver's on the new addition to their family.

The Atlanta Hawks are back in action Wednesday night in a nationally televised game against the Denver Nuggets.

The Atlanta Hawks are back in action Wednesday night and face an up and down Denver Nuggets squad at Philips Arena. The Hawks have had a four-day break to get over last Friday's 113-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers that snapped the team's six-game winning streak. Atlanta's defensive effort against the Cavs was lacking as was their work on the glass. They will have to be much better on Wednesday against a Denver team that is leading the NBA in offensive rebounds.

Despite the long layoff, Kyle Korver looks like he may still be a game-time decision although that will probably be determined at today's shootaround. Korver missed practice on Monday and Tuesday with a sore back that kept him out of the loss to the Cavs. Additionally, DeShawn Stevenson left Tuesday's practice after taking a blow to the head and his status for tonight's game is also unknown. Atlanta assigned rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott to the D-League over the weekend so depending on what happens with Stevenson and Korver, they could have just 10 healthy bodies for tonight's game.

Tip off for tonight's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be carried nationally on ESPN. The Nuggets are 9-9 on the season going 5-1 at home but just 4-8 on the road. The Hawks are 9-5 and 5-3 thus far at Philips Arena.
