The College Park Skyhawks, the G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, open their season Friday night. Ahead of the opener, the Hawks have assigned rookie forward Jalen Johnson to College Park, while transferring Two-Way guards Sharife Cooper and Skylar Mays to the Skyhawks as well.
Johnson and Mays have both appeared in three games this season for the Hawks, albeit in a mop-up role late in games. Cooper has appeared twice in similar fashion, including opening night at home vs. the Dallas Mavericks.
Mays appeared in 33 games for the Hawks last season as a depth option in the backcourt after the Hawks suffered a myriad of midseason injuries on the wing.
Johnson, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, should represent one of the more talented players in the G League, so it will be interesting to see how he looks at that level from a basketball IQ and feel standpoint. Physically, the G League shouldn’t be too tough of a matchup for the 6’9 leaper.
The Skyhawks open their season with two home games this weekend, with the opener being Friday night from the Gateway Center in College Park at 7 pm ET.
