The Atlanta Hawks opened their 2020-21 preseason schedule on Friday evening, flashing upside and also displaying rust in a close loss to the Orlando Magic. Less than 48 hours later, the same two teams square off again on Sunday, with State Farm Arena again playing host to the festivities.

There is plenty to evaluate from the opener, but it is also critical to remember that the preseason isn’t a time for overreaction, especially with the short lead time that the 2020-21 campaign provides. Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce will also be without some projected rotation players in this matchup, with at least some uncertainty with others.

The Hawks announced on Saturday that, while Kris Dunn is progressing toward joining the team in live practice, he will not be re-evaluated until Dec. 28 and he is ruled out for Sunday. Onyeka Okongwu has begun practicing with contact, but he is also out, pending a re-evaluation on Dec. 18. Tony Snell is still self-isolating due to COVID-19 protocols and, when the team revealed its injury report for Sunday’s game specifically, Rajon Rondo (right knee soreness) was listed as doubtful.

Clint Capela (left Achilles soreness), Kevin Huerter (left ankle soreness), De’Andre Hunter (right knee soreness) and Cam Reddish (right ankle soreness) are listed as probable for Sunday’s tilt. If Rondo is unable to play and those listed as probable end up taking the court, the Hawks will have the same complement of options deployed on Friday evening.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest, with the Hawks wrapping up their home preseason schedule with an earlier tip-off than usual.
