Atlanta Hawks open with 100-1 odds to win 2021 NBA championship

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves at Atlanta Hawks Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Nearly seven months have passed since the Atlanta Hawks took the floor in a regular season NBA game and, with the schedule for the 2020-21 season very much uncertain, it could be a while before Trae Young and company face off against another franchise on the hardwood. Beyond that, the Hawks and the rest of the NBA haven’t really begun off-season activities just yet, with the NBA Draft scheduled for Nov. 18 and free agency presumably lined up to follow just a few days later.

However, it is never too early to think about next season and, to that end, the good folks at released (way too early) betting odds to win the 2021 NBA title.

As you can see, the Hawks are listed at 100-1 to win the title next season, and Atlanta sits in a tie with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards for the 19th-best odds. also released odds to win the Eastern Conference, and the Hawks are (again) tied with the Bulls, Pacers and Wizards at 33-1.

Of course, it has to be noted — or even emphasized — that roster turnover will occur across the league and, with the Hawks having the most salary cap space in the NBA, Atlanta could make significant changes in the next few weeks and months. Still, this is kind of a gauge for how the general basketball-viewing public sees the Hawks at this moment, and the team’s placement in the pecking order actually outlines a bit of an uptick from where Atlanta ended the 2019-20 campaign.

In fact, only six teams — Bucks, Celtics, Nets, Heat, Raptors, 76ers — have better odds to win the East than the Hawks. Given Atlanta’s (very) public comments about making the playoffs next season, that is also something to keep in mind, even if the roster will be changing in the coming days.

More than anything, these odds exist for a bit of off-season fodder but, hey, we’ll take it in early October.

Stay tuned.
