UPDATE: Trae Young will NOT play in Sunday’s game. De’Andre Hunter will play and start.
The Atlanta Hawks will complete a weekend road trip on Sunday evening in Brooklyn. Following a disappointing loss on Friday in the nation’s capital, the Hawks aim to stop a three-game losing skid but, with news breaking in the Nets’ favor on Saturday, the task could be a bit tougher for Atlanta.
Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) is expected to return to action for the Nets — he is officially listed as probable — and it will be the first appearance for the star guard since mid-November. Brooklyn could be without Wilson Chandler (left hamstring tightness) and/or Garrett Temple (right knee contusion) with both listed as questionable, but the Nets will have their offensive centerpiece in place against the Hawks.
On Atlanta’s side, the injury report is a bit busier than it has been in the last couple of games, including a high-profile addition after the original report surfaced. Jabari Parker (shoulder) and Bruno Fernando (personal) remain out, but there is some concern about the status of Trae Young, De’Andre Hunter and Alex Len. While Len is probable to play with a right knee strain, Hunter (right foot pain) is questionable and Young was a late addition with left hamstring pain. If the second-year guard and/or the rookie forward are unable to play, Atlanta would be in a precarious position, but more information should arrive during the day. In the meantime, Brandon Goodwin, Cam Reddish, Kevin Huerter and others could be line for more playing time.
With all of that in mind, the Hawks are currently listed as 7.5-point underdogs, painting the picture of the difficulty for Atlanta. That number could also balloon if Young is unable to play, especially given the Hawks’ uneven track record without him available on the offensive end. Still, it isn’t as if the Nets are an unbeatable foe and the visitors will have plenty of motivation to stop the recent bleeding.
Stay tuned throughout the day and be encouraged to utilize the comments below as a “game thread” for the action.
