Let the fun begin.

As usual, the Las Vegas Summer League will be interesting to monitor for the Atlanta Hawks, with a ton of moving parts and the opportunity to evaluate young players against professional competition. This time around, the Hawks have even more uncertainty than normal, simply because of the trade machinations involved with No. 4 pick De’Andre Hunter and No. 34 pick Bruno Fernando, but the organization formally announced the Summer League roster on Tuesday and it is as follows (in alphabetical order).

  • Jaylen Adams — G, St. Bonaventure (Under contract, non-guaranteed for 2019-20)
  • Charlie Brown — G/F, St. Joseph’s (Two-Way contract)
  • Landen Lucas — C, Kansas
  • Tahjere McCall — G, Tennessee State (Played for G League’s Long Island Nets in 2018-19)
  • Matt Mooney — G, Texas Tech
  • Amine Noua — F, ASVEL/France
  • Jordan Sibert — G, Dayton (briefly appeared for Hawks in 2018-19)
  • Omari Spellman — F/C, Villanova (Under contract, No. 30 pick in 2018 NBA Draft)
  • Reid Travis — F, Kentucky
  • Nick Ward — C, Michigan State
  • Thomas Wimbush — F, Fairmont State (Played for G League’s Long Island Nets in 2018-19)

For the sake of clarity, Hunter and Fernando are expected to join Atlanta’s Summer League roster at some point but, because the rookies are not technically part of the organization until trade calls are completed, they cannot be listed in formal fashion. In addition, No. 10 overall pick Cam Reddish is not available to play in Las Vegas as a result of a core muscle injury, though he is expected to be on the floor in full by the end of July.

Elsewhere, Omari Spellman and Jaylen Adams return as players already under contract with the Hawks, with newly-inked Two-Way wing Charlie Brown also prominently involved. Spellman projects to act as something of a centerpiece given his pedigree as a 2018 first-round selection and, from a Hawks perspective, it would be encouraging if he looked the part of a dominant force in this setting. Adams is operating on a non-guaranteed contract for the 2019-20 campaign and, as such, it will be interesting to monitor his progress, particularly given the fact that he appears to be the primary option at the point guard spot in the desert. Brown will be experiencing his first taste of professional basketball and fans of the Hawks will be able to decipher what they might expect for the 2019-20 season and beyond.

Finally, there are noteworthy non-roster invites for Summer League, headlined by Texas Tech guard Matt Mooney, Michigan State big man Nick Ward and Kentucky forward Reid Travis. It should be noted that Florida State forward Phil Cofer was widely reported (and announced by his university) as a participant, though he is not included on Atlanta’s official list.

Given the team’s current roster constraints, it would be relatively surprising if any of the non-roster options were to make the 2019-20 regular season roster, but training camp invites and/or Two-Way considerations appear possible. From the perspective of the players, increased visibility on a league-wide stage is also a positive element, even without a clear path to the full-time roster.

The Hawks will open their Summer League journey on Saturday, July 6 with a match-up against the Milwaukee Bucks and the team’s full schedule can be found here.

Stay tuned.
