After taking part in two Summer Leagues in 2018, the Atlanta Hawks will limit their on-court action to the desert in 2019, joining 31 other squads at the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The festivities will begin on July 5 and, ten days later on July 15, a Summer League champion will be crowned at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Along the way, there will be time to evaluate Atlanta’s young players but, in addition to that, the Las Vegas Summer League also has a format change when compared to previous iterations. For the second straight year, all 30 NBA teams will be in the mix but, in 2019, Team China and Team Croatia will join the festivities, putting together an 83-game competition.
Teams will be guaranteed at least five games but, unlike previous years, four of the games will be pre-scheduled as preliminary events. From there, the top eight teams will be seeded in tournament fashion, with the other 24 squads playing a single consolation game before flying home.
Here are the four pre-scheduled contests for Atlanta:
- Saturday, Jul. 6 - vs. Bucks (5:00 pm ET, NBA TV)
- Sunday, Jul. 7 - vs. Wolves (5:30 pm ET, ESPN2)
- Tuesday, Jul. 9 - vs. Pacers (5:30 pm ET, NBA TV)
- Thursday, Jul. 11 - vs. Wizards (6:30 pm ET, ESPN2)
At this early juncture, the official roster for the Hawks is unknown, but it is safe to assume two the team’s newly-drafted rookies — No. 4 pick De’Andre Hunter and No. 34 pick Bruno Fernando (albeit with the potential for late arrivals due to trade timing) — will be flanked by returning players like Omari Spellman and Jaylen Adams for the action.
It should be noted that No. 10 pick Cam Reddish will not participate as he recovers from a core muscle injury, but the Hawks will presumably have St. Joseph’s wing Charlie Brown, reported as a Two-Way contract signing, and former Texas Tech guard Matt Mooney available for the trip to Vegas.
