The Atlanta Hawks have been defined by their overtime games in recent days, having combined to play five overtime periods in their last two contests. The quadruple-overtime loss in Atlanta against the Chicago Bulls sets the table for Sunday’s rematch in the Windy City; Trae Young and Zach LaVine traded shot for shot for more than 60 minutes before the Bulls were able to pull out the victory nearly four hours after the game tipped off.
The loss dropped Atlanta to 21-42, while Chicago improved to 18-45. In a down year for both franchises, there were plenty of highlights from the matchup on Friday and plenty of reason for both teams to feel good about their chances in the rematch.
On the availability front, Atlanta’s injury report is much messier than it was going into the first game of their home-and-home series with Chicago. John Collins is still recovering from flu-like symptoms and did not join the team on its Saturday flight to Illinois, though there’s still a chance he could take a later flight and make it in time for the game on Sunday afternoon.
Elsewhere, Vince Carter, Kevin Huerter, and Alex Len are all probable to play with a varying list of contusions. Huerter fell hard on his back on Friday, which caused him to miss most of the remainder of that contest. Additionally, Taurean Prince (personal) and Omari Spellman (left ankle) will be missing for Atlanta after playing on Friday.
The Bulls came out of Friday’s game relatively unscathed — their same three players are out again (Chandler Hutchison, Wendell Carter Jr., and Denzel Valentine) — with only Zach LaVine joining the injury report as probable with a lower back injury.
Should LaVine be ready to go, it will be the LaVine-Young show once again as the Hawks rely heavily on their rookie point guard to create offense on nearly every trip down the floor. Given how many of the Hawks’ core rotation players are either missing or banged up, the responsibility will fall even more heavily on Young to create.
Stay tuned throughout Sunday morning and early afternoon for all the latest news and notes from the Hawks.
