Preview: Hawks visit nation’s capital in road trip finale

The end is near.

NBA: Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror and the Atlanta Hawks will return home in short order. However, the road-weary Hawks have one more assignment before they can make their way to Atlanta, as the Washington Wizards await for the road trip finale on Monday evening.

John Collins and Trae Young engineered a victory over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night and there were plenty of highlights along the way. With that said, this is a more difficult task (at least on paper) for the Hawks, as the Wizards have performed at a level above the Suns this season (even without John Wall) and the home team has some built-in advantages here.

Atlanta’s 3-3 mark on this road trip is both unexpected and impressive and, with that in mind, the Wizards have actually lost three of their past four games. Still, Washington has been home in the nation’s capital for a full week and they will own a significant rest advantage (in addition to home-court) as a result. Beyond that, the Wizards will deploy the best player on the floor in All-Star guard Bradley Beal, who is averaging a robust 26.9 points, 5.6 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game over Washington’s last 18 contests.

Lloyd Pierce’s team is still quite dangerous, though, especially if Young and Collins can repeat their magic from Phoenix. The good folks in Las Vegas install the Wizards as six-point favorites (at the time of this post) over the Hawks in this game but, in the end, the result may come down to which Hawks team shows up, whether it be a young bunch with boundless energy or a team that looks as if it has been on the road for two weeks.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest.
