With training camp set to begin in exactly one week, virtually everyone in the NBA world has weighed in on the 2018-19 Atlanta Hawks in some form or fashion. Most national outlets (in fact, an overwhelming majority) have installed the Hawks as the team most likely to finish with the league’s worst record and, even if that is an easy sentiment to disagree with (as I do), it is very difficult to see a path for Atlanta to return to the postseason in April.
That backdrop sets the stage for the concept of playoff odds and the good folks at Bovada.lv recently released “Will they or won’t they?” numbers for each of the league’s 30 teams. To the surprise of no one, the Hawks enter the campaign as a long-shot to finish with one of the eight best records in the East and Bovada allows patrons to wager on that positive outcome with 20-to-1 odds.
In theory, that implies a 5 percent probability of the Hawks making the postseason, which might even seem high if you believe Atlanta is, in fact, the league’s worst team. That is a debate that could rage, however, and there is an avenue to wager against the Hawks making the playoffs, albeit with astronomical, 50-to-1 odds.
This probably isn’t the best investment opportunity on either side but, even for entertainment purposes only, it is sometimes useful to sift through additional information in the betting markets.
