On Monday evening, word broke that Lloyd Pierce and the Atlanta Hawks were nearing the addition of a crucial member of the assistant coaching staff. Just hours later, further confirmation of that initial hire has arrived and, in addition, another interesting name has surfaced as a reported member of Pierce’s coaching group.
Marc J. Spears of ESPN’s The Undefeated reports that Mavs assistant Melvin Hunt will be Pierce’s “lead assistant” in Atlanta. That further confirms the initial reporting from Marc Stein of the New York Times, with the firm addition that Hunt’s previously assumed role will be confirmed as the No. 1 lieutenant for Pierce.
Michael Cunningham of the AJC also reports that the agreement with Hunt will be announced on Tuesday.
Hawks have reached agreement with assistant coach Melvin Hunt to join Lloyd Pierce's staff. Expected to be official later today.

Spears also indicates that the Hawks will hire Phoenix Suns Marlon assistant coach and player development coordinator Marlon Garnett will join the staff as an assistant in Atlanta. Garnett previously played college basketball at Santa Clara with Pierce and, after a lengthy playing career, he joined the staff of the San Antonio Spurs before moving on to his most recent stop in Phoenix.
The rest of Pierce’s coaching staff will be interesting to monitor, particularly on the heels of Mike Budenholzer indicating he would like most of his staff to join him in Milwaukee. Still, there is now public knowledge of two additions and both brings interesting skill sets to the table.
Stay tuned.
