In the closing weeks of the 2017-2018 NBA season, there was plenty of attention paid to the standings for the Atlanta Hawks and it was heavily focused on the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery. When the 82-game marathon concluded, the Hawks landed in a tie with the Dallas Mavericks for the third-worst record in the league, setting up a coin flip that did not go in Atlanta’s favor and odds that were less rosy than many anticipated.
However, the team’s chances were virtually unchanged when it came to jumping into the top three on May 15 and, on cue, that is exactly what transpired. When the Dallas Mavericks popped at the No. 5 spot, the Hawks were assured of a top-three pick and, moments later, it was revealed that Atlanta zoomed to the No. 3 perch.
