Preview: Hawks welcome Grizzlies in lottery-bound battle

It’s Tuesday and the Hawks have a (very) winnable game.

The Atlanta Hawks had an interesting weekend on the road, with a strange loss in Boston and an even more bizarre victory in New York. On Tuesday, though, the team returns home to Philips Arena and the Memphis Grizzlies will be waiting.

Marc Gasol and company were also in action on Sunday, falling by a lopsided margin at the hands of the Toronto Raptors, and that was a continuation of a sharp downturn in Memphis. The Grizzlies have dropped five of six games and, with Mike Conley on the shelf (in addition to all kinds of tanking incentive), that is likely a harbinger of things to come.

While the Hawks (16-37) and Grizzlies (18-34) have similar records, it would easy to argue that Atlanta is actually the better team at the moment. Memphis does boast the biggest name on the roster with Gasol but the team is battered with injuries (on a roster that couldn’t sustain them) and the Hawks have more youth and talent in some key areas.

Regardless, this should be an interesting game between two lottery-bound squads and, for the tanking enthusiasts, the team that comes up short on the court may be in the better position moving forward. The Hawks actually enter this game as a small favorite to achieve victory (according to the good folks in Las Vegas) and that provides a bit of a baseline for expectations.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest from Philips Arena.
