Preview: Hawks welcome Raptors for pre-holiday tilt

Hosting the class of the East.

NBA: Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Despite positive signs during Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Atlanta Hawks continue to operate in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. Things won’t get easier for Trae Young, John Collins and company on Wednesday evening, as the East-leading Toronto Raptors visit State Farm Arena for the first time this season.

The Raptors arrive on the second night of a road back-to-back, as Toronto needed a buzzer-beater from Danny Green on Tuesday evening to secure a win over the Orlando Magic. As a result of that quick turnaround, there isn’t a great deal of information available as to what the visiting team’s available roster will look like, with Kawhi Leonard sitting on one side of each back-to-back to this point in the calendar. Beyond that, OG Anunoby missed Tuesday’s game and could conceivably be unavailable for the Raptors.

Despite the availability questions for Toronto, this is a tough spot on paper for the Hawks, at least in the event that either Leonard or Kyle Lowry appears on the floor. The Raptors own the best record in the conference for a reason and, while they do have star power, this is a deep and talented roster capable of winning even amid less than optimal circumstances.

On the Atlanta side, it will be interesting to see how the team responds after a fourth quarter slip on Monday. The Hawks do have a rest advantage that could come in handy and, with everyone back and available (with the exception of Omari Spellman and Alex Poythress, both listed as doubtful), depth could be a relative strength for Atlanta here.

At the time of this post, no Las Vegas line is available for Wednesday’s game, presumably due to the uncertainty with the Raptors. Still, it feels safe to assume that the Hawks will enter the fray as home underdogs and Lloyd Pierce will lead his attempt in an attempt to stop the NBA’s longest losing streak.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest.
