Preview: Hawks travel to Memphis for road preseason opener

On the road again...

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks began the 2018-19 preseason on a high note, playing well against the New Orleans Pelicans and securing a win (albeit one of little consequence) at McCamish Pavilion. In follow-up to that performance, the Hawks will begin their road preseason slate on Friday evening, with a trip to take on Mike Conley, Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies.

As with any preseason game, it is important to keep things in perspective and that is doubly true for a team in the Hawks that is in the midst of a rebuild. Still, it will be interesting to see how players respond in their second game, particularly when it comes to DeAndre’ Bembry (coming off a breakout showing in the opener) and rookies like Trae Young and Kevin Huerter.

In fact, there may be more to see of some wing players on the roster, as Taurean Prince will miss Friday’s game as a result of illness. In addition, Dewayne Dedmon (ankle), Justin Anderson (tibia) and Daniel Hamilton (shoulder) will miss the game but, on the bright side, Omari Spellman is off the injury report and expected to make his preseason debut.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest as the Hawks navigate their first road tilt and, perhaps most importantly, it might be wise to push back against overreactions in the coming hours and days.
