Wednesday evening was a lot of fun for fans of the Atlanta Hawks, particularly by normal preseason standards. Some of that was inextricably tied to a game-winning three from Trae Young but, beyond that, there were plenty of positive signs for Lloyd Pierce’s team and one more data point exists in the form of the preseason finale on Friday evening against the Miami Heat.
The team will be without John Collins again in this spot, as the talented big man has been ruled out for the duration of the preseason. Collins’ status for the regular season opener (less than one week away) is still unknown but, in his absence, the Hawks have deployed the likes of Vince Carter, Alex Poythress and Omari Spellman for extended minutes at the power forward position.
Elsewhere, it will be interesting to see how Pierce treats the rotation in the final preseason tilt, particularly after many key cogs took on full workloads on Wednesday evening. Young, Taurean Prince, Kent Bazemore and Alex Len all played 29 minutes or more in the game and, when prompted about the rotational possibilities in advance of the team’s final home game, Pierce was non-committal on his plans for deployment here.
Regardless, this is another opportunity to observe the Hawks before the “real” basketball begins on Wednesday in New York and that is always fun. Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest.
