Preview: Hawks host Spurs for MLK Day showdown

An annual tradition returns.

The Atlanta Hawks usually host an NBA game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day but, in 2017, the team played on the road against the New York Knicks. For 2018, however, the Hawks are back in Atlanta and the opponent this time around is Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs.

Given the way Atlanta has performed this season, the Hawks certainly are not “supposed” to beat the Spurs, even at home. With that said, this should be an inspired performance for the home team and, if nothing else, a better-than-average crowd at Philips Arena.

Match-up wise, the Hawks will be challenged in defending Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge (among others) and the play of Taurean Prince on the defensive end will be critical to success. To make things even more interesting, San Antonio enters with the league’s second-best defense this season and that should present quite a few challenges for the home team in scoring consistently.

MLK Day afternoon is a fun place for basketball and you can join us for the festivities. Stay tuned throughout the afternoon and evening for all the latest.
