There is a school of thought that the Atlanta Hawks could be looking to add another backup point guard option in the 2017 NBA Draft. The team does have Malcolm Delaney under contract for the 2017-2018 season but, with Jose Calderon hitting free agency, there is a spot “available” and the Hawks hold two second round picks (No. 31 and No. 60) that could be useful in that regard.
Former Kansas All-American point guard Frank Mason profiles as a potential candidate and, according to Mason’s Instagram page, it appears that he is in Atlanta for a workout with the Hawks on Friday.
It is important to note that the Hawks do not officially release workout information in the way that some NBA teams do and Chris Vivlamore of the AJC is an invaluable resource in gathering this information. However, the presence of an official jersey could serve as at least reasonable confirmation in this case.
Mason likely is not in play with the No. 19 overall pick but, given his vast pedigree, the diminutive guard might be a solid second-round investment. The 5’11 lead guard ranks as the No. 44 overall for DraftExpress and, while his ceiling is not immense, it isn’t far-fetched to think that Mason could stick as a backup point guard in the league for a long time.
Stay tuned.
