With the first selection of the Travis Schlenk era, the Atlanta Hawks have selected Wake Forest big man John Collins with the 19th pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft.
Collins was an obscenely productive college player in the ACC, averaging 19.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The sophomore stands at 6’10 and 235 pounds while bringing a great deal of offensive potential and rebounding production to the table.
With that said, there are defensive concerns from Collins, who was not a rim protector at the college level and could struggle to play in space with the increasingly wide open NBA. His rebounding, especially on the defensive end, should help in that regard but the Hawks are banking on what appears to be a pick based on safety and college production.
The Hawks also currently hold the 41st and 60th selections of the second round. Stay tuned.
