Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks will play the Miami Heat on the road, looking to lock up a victory to start off the month. Although the Heat are only 19-30, they have won eight games in a row and are looking to extend that streak even further. Largely due to this recent surge, the Heat are only a few games out of a playoff spot in the East.
For Atlanta, this game will provide a test to see if there are any lingering side effects after the four-overtime game on Sunday afternoon. While it is fortunate that the team got two days off to rest following this marathon of a contest, it’s still possible that some of the veterans — like Paul Millsap — will still be feeling the effects of playing extended minutes.
While this game is dangerous for the Hawks from a fatigue perspective, it is also potentially dangerous because of how well Miami has played. Any team that has won eight games in a row is dangerous, particularly when this game falls on the road (and before a much more high-profile game in Houston). This is a game that the Hawks should be able to win, but also one that they should approach carefully.
The Hawks shot very well on 3-pointers in January, and it will be interesting to see if this trend continues as February begins. This is the first game of a mini road trip, as Atlanta will travel to Houston for a Thursday-night contest against the Rockets next. After that, the team will return home for a few games.
