Dream’s winning streak ends in New York

Cooper

The Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty met on Wednesday in a match-up of the two top teams in the Eastern Conference. Both teams came in with three game winning streaks but unfortunately, today’s result went in favor of the Liberty as New York pulled away for an 86-62 win.

The Dream and Liberty kept the contest relatively close as New York led only two points, 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. Sancho Lyttle opened the second quarter by tying the game at 15-15 with a lay-up; however, the Liberty responded with a 12-3 run to take a nine-point lead.

Things got out of hand quickly for the Dream in the second half. Atlanta would go four minutes without scoring a basket as the Liberty went on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 54-31. New York’s lead swelled to as many as 26 points before cruising home for the victory.

Atlanta was never able to get on track offensively and the Liberty took advantage. The Dream shot 30 percent from the field in the game and turned the ball over 13 times which New York converted into 22 points. Tiffany Hayes led the way for the Dream with 12 points while Bria Holmes came off the bench with 11. Angel McCoughtry finished with a season-low three points and was just 1 for 6 from the field in 10 minutes of playing time.

Tina Charles led the Liberty with 18 points and nine rebounds. Sugar Rodgers added 13 while Shevonte Zellous and Rebecca Allen added 11 each.

Atlanta’s next game is on the road against the Indiana Fever on Friday at 7:00 P.M. Let’s see how our ladies recover from a tough loss against a Eastern Conference rival.
