Dream see late lead slip away with 84-81 loss to Storm

The Atlanta Dream watched another lead slip away late in an 84-81 loss to the Seattle Storm

The Atlanta Dream couldn’t stop the bleeding Wednesday night as they dropped their fourth straight game with an 84-81 loss to the Seattle Storm. Atlanta was missing a pair of starters in Tiffany Hayes and Sancho Lyttle who sat out due to injury but once again saw a late lead slip away in the game’s final moments.

The Dream fell behind early as the Storm jumped out to a 27-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. Seattle pushed the lead to as many as 11 in the second before settling in with a 45-35 advantage.

Atlanta would make their move in the third outscoring Seattle 25-16 to cut the deficit to just one point. Angel McCoughtry and Bria Holmes combined to score 18 of Atlanta’s 25 points in the third. The Dream led 81-77 with 1:38 remaining before Breanna Stewart scored five straight points to put Seattle back in front. Sue Bird delivered the dagger with eight seconds remaining when she canned a jump shot. Atlanta’s Meaghan Simmons missed a desperation attempt at the other end as the game ended.

Stewart was phenomenal again for the Storm leading all scorers with 38 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Crystal Langhorne added 18 while Sue Bird finished with 15 and a game-high five assists. Seattle shot 50 percent from the field in the game and knocked down 6 of 18 three-point attempts.

McCoughtry led Atlanta with 22 points and seven rebounds. Elizabeth Williams added 21 points and eight boards.

The Dream will wrap up their road trip on Thursday with a stop to face the red hot Los Angeles Sparks.
