Atlanta Hawks see NBA Championship odds plummet following Jeff Teague trade

Jeff Teague is gone and bookmakers noticed.

The NBA Draft is often an invigorating time for a franchise, as new blood arrives to set the stage for a bright future on the court. In the case of the Atlanta Hawks, though, a productive draft night could not prevent a precipitous drop when it comes to the team’s odds to claim the 2017 NBA Championship.

As noted above, the Hawks entered the night listed at 30-to-1 (at some sportsbooks) to take home the ultimate hardware, but with the Jeff Teague trade on the books, that number took a dive to 50-to-1. This isn’t a huge surprise given the presumptive downgrade at the point guard position and, right now, at the backup point guard position, but Atlanta’s draft acquisitions were not enough to offset this dip and that could be noteworthy.

It must be said that NBA Draft picks should be viewed through the prism of the future, and even with Taurean Prince and DeAndre Bembry being older, more established prospects, this rings true. Still, this change in future odds has much more to do with the loss of Jeff Teague than it does with which players the Atlanta Hawks elected to invest in on Thursday night.

For the degenerates among us, the Hawks would pay a larger return on investment should the miraculous happen in June of 2017. Enjoy.
