With just five hours remaining until the 2016 NBA Draft, Sam Vecenie of CBS Sports has released his final mock draft, and the Atlanta Hawks pick up two very interesting prospects.
At number 12 overall, Vecenie outlines a scenario in which the Hawks add Michigan State big man Deyonta Davis.
Atlanta has moved up to this spot in the Jeff Teague deal, and is said to be looking either big or to move the pick. I would guess that the Hawks don't make both No. 21 and No. 12, but if they keep this one Davis makes perfect sense inside as he can play both the 4 and the 4 depending on the lineup, can also defend his position well, and has potential to shoot it.
Following that pick, the number 21 spot belongs to Spanish forward Juan Hernangomez.
It would be a surprise if Atlanta made both picks. Still, Hernangomez ability to stretch the floor and provide floor-spacing would be a terrific addition to Atlanta, or anyone else who felt the need to move up to this spot to take the ACB's young player of the year.
The major takeaway from this mock draft is that Vecenie (among many others) does not expect Atlanta to make both picks, but if they do, this would be a nice haul. Davis presents a vast ceiling as a rim protector and rebounder that can also step out and potentially shoot with range, while Hernangomez is a prospect that many statistical projections really enjoy.
At this point, the Atlanta Hawks have been tied to just about everyone outside of the top-five picks in this class, meaning that the waters are quite murky. Still, Davis and Hernangomez would appear to be a thoroughly reasonable takeaway from Thursday night for Mike Budenholzer, Wes Wilcox and this front office, and Atlanta could do much, much worse with these two selections.
Stay tuned.
