Domantas Sabonis is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to the 2016 NBA Draft class, and at least two current mock drafts seem to agree with regard to the Atlanta Hawks.
Andrew Sharp of Sports Illustrated released his "6.0" mock on Thursday morning, and he projects Sabonis to land with Atlanta at No. 12 overall.
Let's see... Undersized, underrated, high motor, high IQ, star of everyone's favorite Cinderella team... He's basically already a Hawk, right? And this is definitely the best–case scenario for Domantas Sabonis. He's good and productive now, but if the Hawks can help him add a perimeter jumper, he could be excellent for the next 10 years.
In short, I agree with the writer's overall premise, and the fit is tremendous. Elsewhere on the internet, the good people at DraftExpress also project Sabonis to Atlanta.
Note: A screen-shot is included below, as DraftExpress often changes its projections within the same web address.
While Sabonis was largely a pipe dream when the Hawks were picking only at No. 21 overall, the Jeff Teague trade firmly propels Atlanta into range to claim the former Gonzaga big man if they so desire. There is a possibility, of course, that the 6-foot-11 combo big man is off the board, but his passing, basketball IQ, rebounding and touch around the rim would be highly appealing for a team that could use additional depth in the frontcourt as insurance for Tiago Splitter's health and the potential departure of Al Horford.
There are players with higher upside than Sabonis that will be available at No. 12, but none would be safer and there is plenty of room for growth in his game. The Hawks may not stay put with either of the team's first round selections anyway, but if they do, Domantas Sabonis would be a beautiful choice.
