The Atlanta Dream look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday when they try to slow down the red hot New York Liberty.
Since starting the season 6-1, the Dream have gone 2-3 over their last five games. They suffered their worst loss of the season on Sunday with a 95-65 setback to the Washington Mystics. They will have their hands full on Wednesday against a Liberty team that has won four straight behind the brilliance of center Tina Charles.
Charles comes into the game averaging a league-best 22.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She earned her third Eastern Conference Player of the Week nod this past week and is averaging 28.7 points per game over her last three. New York is riding a four-game winning streak and has tied the Dream at the top of the Eastern Conference standings with an 8-4 record.
Atlanta scored an 85-79 win in overtime in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Tiffany Hayes had a monster day with 27 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Angel McCoughtry scored all 15 of her points in the second half as the Dream came from behind to earn the victory. Charles led New York with 29 points and 10 rebounds in that earlier matchup but the Liberty shot just 36 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers in the loss.
Slowing Charles will be a key for the Dream and will fall on the shoulders of center Elizabeth Williams who is also off to the best start of her career. Williams is averaging 12.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and a league-best 2.4 blocks per game so far this season. The Dream’s frontcourt will also get a boost with the expected return of forward Sancho Lyttle.
Lyttle missed the last four games while playing with the Spanish National team in an Olympic qualifying tournament.
