Juan Hernangomez is not a familiar name to many NBA fans, but fans of the Atlanta Hawks might want to begin studying his game. Jonas Nader of Yahoo (via RotoWorld) projects Hernangomez to land with the Hawks with the number 21 overall pick, and while it is just a mock draft, there is plenty to like about the Spanish forward's game.
He projects to be a stretch four in the NBA but might be able to play some small forward as well. The Hawks are set at power forward with Paul Millsap, so Hernangomez will be able to develop at his own pace and could even stay overseas. He’s quickly rising up draft boards.
Hernangomez was named as the ACB league's young player of the year after averaging 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and shooting 36% from three as a 20-year-old and he is a popular first round target. There is great potential that Hernangomez could be a "draft and stash" player for teams looking to go that route, but his ceiling is quite high and, at his age, there is reason to believe that a real impact could be made in the not so distant future.
The 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward is best known for his versatility and strong jump-shooting, and Hernangomez would appear to fit nicely as a stretch four in the NBA. His frame is a bit lacking at this point, but preliminary evaluations are positive and Atlanta could do far worse with the number 21 pick, provided the organization is ready to exercise some level of patience with his arrival.
