Tavares was waived by Atlanta on October 31 as the team faced a bit of a roster crunch after injuries to Tiago Splitter and Mike Scott. The Hawks drafted Tavares in the second round of the 2014 Draft. He spent a year playing in Spain before signing with Atlanta in July of 2015.
Tavares played sparingly for the Hawks and spent a large portion of last season playing in the D-League. He appeared in 12 career NBA games averaging 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds. He averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in 29 career games in the D-League.
It was originally thought that Tavares would return overseas but if this report is true, he has apparently decided to put that on hold for now. By signing in the D-League, he would be available to receive a call up from any NBA team.
