The Atlanta Hawks hit the road for a rare mid-day matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. Atlanta used a big fourth quarter on Thursday to secure a 114-99 win over the Washington Wizards. Philadelphia faltered late in their opener on Wednesday losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-97.
Besides the peculiar start time on a college football Saturday, this game will feature an intriguing match up at the center position. Joel Embiid made his long awaited debut in Wednesday’s loss for the Sixers and didn’t disappoint with 20 points and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes. He is still under a minutes restriction, so don’t expect to see him for more than 20-25 against the Hawks.
On the other side, Dwight Howard had a good debut for the Hawks as well with 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds in the win over the Wizards. Atlanta out rebounded Washington 52-40 and finished the game with a 20-6 edge in second chance points.
Atlanta also got big performances from Paul Millsap and their bench combination of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Thabo Sefolosha. Millsap put up a game-high 28 points showing that through all of the change, he is still the most important Hawks player. Hardaway Jr. scored 12 of his 21 points in Atlanta’s fourth quarter explosion against Washington.
