Hawks vs Lakers preview: Atlanta seeks rare win in Los Angeles

Atlanta's road trip rolls on Sunday night when the Hawks square off against the Lakers at Staples Center.

The Atlanta Hawks look to break a long losing streak in Los Angeles when their road trip continues with a Sunday matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. Atlanta hasn't beaten the Lakers on the road since 2006 and will be looking to salvage a split in the season series.

The Lakers handed the Hawks a rare loss at Philips Arena back in November. Atlanta has lost just nine times since and are looking to move closer to clinching home court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs as the top seed.

The Hawks have gone 1-1 on their current six-game road trip. They suffered a blowout loss to the Denver Nuggets to open the trip but bounced back on Friday with a come from behind win in Phoenix. Atlanta trailed by eight points entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Suns 31-14 in the fourth to come away with their 51st victory of the season. Paul Millsap led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds while Kyle Kover knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 14.

Its been a lost season in Los Angeles for the Lakers who are simply playing out the string. L.A.'s lost six of 10 including a 101-94 loss at home to the New York Knicks on Thursday. Byron Scott called his team "selfish" after that latest loss and said his players were expecting an easy win over the Knicks.

This Lakers team will look a bit different than the one that knocked off the Hawks back in November. Kobe Bryant was declared out for the season during January and Nick Young's season could be over as well. Bryant scored 28 points in the first meeting while Young added 17 off the bench.

One thing that has gone right for the Lakers this season is the play of rookie point guard Jordan Clarkson who has been a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season. Clarkson didn't play in the first meeting with Atlanta but has played in 42 games and is averaging 9.5 points on 43 percent shooting.

The Hawks will be without reserve forward Mike Scott who will have his broken toe examined on Monday back in Atlanta. The team is expected to sign former Spurs forward Austin Daye to a 10-day contract on Sunday.
