Ayon's first preference was to remain in the NBA but he couldn't turn away from the money that was being offered overseas. Not surprising that his deal with Real Madrid contains several outs according to Pick's report. Ayon also garnered interest from Barcelona as well as China.
Ayon revived his stock with a strong showing at the FIBA World Cup. He helped lead Mexico into the knockout round where they were eliminated by Team USA 86-63. Ayon averaged a team-best 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds. He finished with 25 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Team USA.
Ayon suffered through an injury plagued season with the Atlanta Hawks in 2014. He appeared in just 26 games due to shoulder and ankle injuries.
