The San Antonio Spurs have shown interest in free agent center Gustavo Ayon per a report from ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
Interesting rumble just dribbled in on eve of FIBA World Cup: Reigning champs San Antonio have registered interest in Mexico's Gustavo Ayon
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) August 29, 2014
Ayon had seen limited interest on the free agent market this summer after spending an injury plagued campaign with the Atlanta Hawks last season. Ayon appeared in just 29 games for the Hawks thanks to a variety of injuries including season ending shoulder surgery. Reports also suggest that he has an offer to play in China.
Ayon has fully recovered from offseason surgery and will play for Mexico at the FIBA World Cup which gets underway on Saturday. Mexico will open the tournament at 1:50 p.m. against Lithuania. The game can be seen online on ESPN3.
San Antonio has 14 players with guaranteed contracts and have also shown interest in bringing back Aron Baynes. Stein's report states that hasn't changed and that Ayon could be a replacement for Baynes or be a part of the final roster along side him.
