NBA Draft 2014: Atlanta Hawks select Walter Tavares with pick No. 43 (Updated)

The Atlanta Hawks draft 7-3 center prospect Walter Tavares with the 43rd pick of the 2014 NBA Draft

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks wrapped up their portion of the 2014 NBA Draft by selecting 7-3 center Walter Tavares out of Cape Verde Praia. Atlanta reportedly had Tavares in for a workout last week. He will likely remain in Spain for at least another season before coming to the NBA.

The first thing that jumps out at you is Tavares' massive size. In addition to standing at 7'3" and a 9'10" standing reach. He has played the last two seasons with Gran Canaria in the Spanish ACB. He averaged 6.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in just over 21 minutes of action this season. Surprisingly he has a soft touch at the free throw line where he converted 72 percent this season.

He is 22 years old but didn't start playing basketball until he was 18 so he is a late bloomer. He is a very raw prospect but his sheer size gives him massive upside.

"Walter is an interesting player who is a very hard worker," said Danny Ferry. "He's made great progress over the last couple of years and we look forward to helping him continue to develop."
