The college regular season is winding down and the tournament is rapidly approaching. That means we should expect draft talk to heat up as well over the next month or so. Basketball Insiders' Yannis Koutroupis has updated his latest mock draft and projects Creighton power forward Doug McDermott to the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th pick.
McDermott is listed at 6-8, 223 lbs and is a gifted scorer from the power forward position. He's closing in on ninth place on the NCAA's all-time scoring list and has a shot to end up in the Top 3 before he is finished. But what kind of NBA prospect is he really? His offensive ability looks like it translates. Its kind of fitting that in a recent article by SI.com's Peter Bukowski he is compared to current Hawk and former Creighton star Kyle Korver:
As a catch-and-shoot player, McDermott could at least be Kyle Korver: a deadly shooter who can space the floor and won't kill you on defense. But McDermott also gets to the free throw line 6.4 times per game, grabs almost seven rebounds and consistently seems in heat-check mode.
There will be serious questions about where McDermott fits with a team defensively. He's not really big enough to guard NBA power forwards and may lack the foot speed to chase most NBA wings.
Given his offensive talents, McDermott is an intriguing prospect and one that a lot of analysts will have trouble pegging come June. Here is a look at his scouting report from DraftExpress:
