Walter Tavares' Spanish club Gran Canaria suffered a 70-57 loss to Real Madrid in their Spanish ACB opener. Tavares played 17 minutes off the bench and finished with four points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. He went 1-4 from the field and 2-2 at the free throw line. The Hawks drafted Tavares with the 43rd overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
Tomas Bellas led Gran Canaria with 13 points four assists. Dejuan Summers and Brad Newley finished with eight points each. Gran Canaria went just 3-19 from three-point range in the game.
Ioannis Bourousis led Real Madrid with 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Former Atlanta Hawks center Gustavo Ayon logged a double-double for Real Madrid with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Tavares and Gran Canaria will play again on October 12 against Mike Muscala's former ACB team Rio Natura Monbus who won their opener over La Bruixa d'Or Manresa 88-64.
