Johnson played the last two seasons with the Hawks 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 69 games last season. He developed into a fan favorite due to his hard nosed approach and physical style of play. The Hawks elected not to issue him a qualifying offer this summer. Johnson garnered interest from several teams but was unable to find a multi year offer thanks in large part to his somewhat checkered past.
Johnson eventually headed to China where he is averaging 26 points and nine rebounds. The Chinese season ends on February 16 which is just four days prior to the NBA's trade deadline.
