Three straight victories over Uruguay, Jamaica and Puerto Rico have propelled Mexico into the semifinals at the 2013 FIBA Americas tournament. By guaranteeing a top 4 finish, Mexico has secured a spot in the Basketball World Cup that will be held in Spain next August.
Atlanta Hawks center Gustavo Ayon has been a huge factor in Mexico's success averaging 16.4 points and eight rebounds in the seven games. Ayon led Mexico with 17 points in the win over Uruguay and added 19 points against Jamaica. With a spot in the semifinals clinched, Ayon played just 11 minutes against Puerto Rico finishing with five points and eight rebounds.
The semifinals at the FIBA Americas will begin on Tuesday with Mexico taking on Argentina. The Dominican Republic will face Puerto Rico with the two winners advancing to the finals.
