Mike Budenholzer arrest details: Timeline of events

A timeline of events surrounding Atlanta Hawks' head coach Mike Budenholzer's arrest for DUI.

Mike Budenholzer was arrested for DUI late Wednesday night and was released from jail early Thursday morning. Coach Budenholzer will contest the charges but if found guilty could be facing a multi game suspension from the NBA.

Here is a timeline of events surrounding Mike Budenholzer's arrest per a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a statement from his lawyer.

  • Budenholzer is stopped at 10:30 p.m. by a Georgia State Patrol for a tail light violation in Midtown.
  • Per the officer's report, he smelled alcohol on Budenholzer's breath and asked him to submit to a breath test.
  • Budenholzer refused the breath test and a field sobriety test was then performed.
  • Budenholzer was placed under arrest for DUI.
  • After conferring with his lawyer, Budenholzer asked for a breathalyzer test and requested a blood alcohol test be performed but it the request was refused.
  • Budenholzer was charged with DUI and a tail light violation and released on $1,524 bond at 3:45 a.m.
  • He went directly from jail to Piedmont Hospital where he had a blood alcohol test administered. The results of that test showed a blood alcohol concentration of less than .01.
The Atlanta Hawks released a statement from Danny Ferry shortly after 9 a.m.

"Bud made us aware of the situation last night. We are in the process of gathering more information and will have further comment at the appropriate time."


"I take my role as a leader very seriously and hold myself to a high standard. I apologize to the fans and to the Hawks organization for any negative attention this incident has brought upon my family and the organization while the legal process evolves and I contest these misdemeanor charges," said Coach Budenholzer."

Around 2 p.m. the Hawks issued another statement in regards to the incident:

"We take this matter seriously and have been in constant communication with Coach Budenholzer throughout this situation. We support him during this legal process and will let that take its course."
