The Hawks have taken Dennis Schroeder from the New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig (Germany) with the 17th overall selection in the NBA Draft. Schroeder, at 6-foot-1, is an average sized point guard, but he has a 6-foot-7 wingspan that will make him a formidable defender on the perimeter. He is known for his defense and will likely stay in Germany for another year to develop his offensive game, like Nogueira needs to. Schroeder shot just 41.5% from the field last season in the top German league for 11.9 points per game and 3.3 assists per game. Schroeder's speed and athleticism makes him an intriguing prospect physically and he is already a polished defender, but he has a ways to go on the offensive end.
Schroeder's selection will likely not have an effect on Jeff Teague's status as a restricted free agent since the Hawks can pull their qualifying offer at any time. Also, if they do stash Schroeder in Germany they will still need a point guard for the next few seasons while he develops. The Hawks will select again in the second round at the 44th, 47th, and 50th picks.
UPDATE: We were able to talk via Skype with Schroeder who was in Germany watching the draft with his family. (Quotes are spotty because English is Schroeder's second language and Skype is tough to record from.)
Were you surprised to be drafted by the Hawks?
"I didn't expect [the Hawks to draft me] because I didn't do a work out [with the Hawks] so I didn't expect it, but I'm very glad I was taken because I think the game [in Atlanta] fits me very well."
What did you talk with Danny [Ferry] about after you were drafted?
"Well I talked to him when I was drafted and he said to have a good season we have to work so we can win games."
Can you define yourself as a player?
"My strength is to play defense...and try to bring everybody together...and win some games"
How much of the NBA were you able to watch in Germany, and who are your favorite players?
"I watch the NBA every night. So, I know the NBA pretty good and my favorite players are Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul."
When do you expect to come over?
"I told my family that I want to play in NBA this year because I played very good at HoopSummit and I promised my dad that I want to play in the NBA because that's the next step."
