The Atlanta Hawks finally ran out of gas coming up short in a 109-102 loss to the Orlando Magic. Atlanta made a charge in the second half and briefly took the lead in the fourth. From there turnovers and a lack of presence on defense proved costly allowing Orlando to come away with the victory.
Orlando pretty much controlled the game from the outset. The Hawks quickly took the lead with a Jeff Teague three but it would be the last lead for Atlanta until the fourth quarter. The Magic led 26-20 after one and 56-49 at the half.
Atlanta was able to stay within striking distance for most of the game thanks to their three-point shooting. The Hawks hit 9-19 attempts in the first half and were 15-39 in the game. Atlanta extended its franchise record to eight straight games with at least 10 made threes.
For the second straight night Atlanta made a charge to close the third quarter. Shelvin Mack's three at the quarter horn pulled Atlanta to within three at 79-76. Atlanta took the lead on a Dennis Schröder free throw early in the fourth and led 85-84 with 6:55 remaining.
Orlando responded with a 9-0 run that was fueled by two straight Hawks turnovers to go back up 93-85. The Hawks wouldn't seriously threaten again and eventually fell 109-102.
Jeff Teague led Atlanta with 22 points and eight assists. Lou Williams finished with 18 but was just 6-16 from the floor. Paul Millsap went 0-5 in the first half and finished 4-14 for 17 points and seven rebounds. Mack added 14 points off the bench including 4-7 shooting from deep.
Atlanta sent a double team at Arron Afflalo for much of the night but he hit some big shots late and finished with 21 points. Tobias Harris overcame a slow start to score 17 while Glen Davis and Nikola Vucevic added 16 each. Vucevic also grabbed a game high 14 rebounds. Victor Oladipo added 15 off the bench including some highlight plays despite five turnovers.
Atlanta is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Boston to take on the Celtics in a New Year's Eve matinee.
