The Atlanta Hawks are 30 games into the NBA's regular season and one thing is apparent. There is no quit in this team. Atlanta came back from a 14 point deficit in the second half to defeat the Charlotte Bobcats 118-116 in overtime. Paul Millsap scored a season-best 33 points but it was Pero Antic's circus three with 3.1 seconds remaining that sent the game into the extra period.
Atlanta jumped out to an early 25-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. The pace slowed in the second, as did Atlanta's offense, which played right into the Bobcats' hands. Charlotte led 50-45 at the break.
The third quarter was more of the same for the Hawks as they just couldn't seem to find a rhythm offensively and couldn't get enough stops to elevate the pace on offense. Charlotte led by 11 with 38 seconds to go in the third before the Hawks closed the quarter with a five point run to cut the lead to 77-71.
Atlanta kept chipping away in the fourth and finally retook the lead on a three-pointer from Mike Scott with 9:10 remaining. The Bobcats answered and the Hawks again found themselves trailing 101-98 with just 11.8 seconds remaining. Charlotte defended Atlanta's inbounds play near perfectly when the ball found its way to Antic in the corner. Antic put the ball on the floor and launched a running three-point attempt that found nothing but the bottom of the net.
Antic was 0-6 from the floor before the game-tying shot but knocked down the biggest points of the game for the Hawks.
Lou Williams scored 10 of his 28 points in overtime, all from the free throw line, as Atlanta pulled ahead. Atlanta went a perfect 12-12 from the line in the extra session to help pull out the victory.
Jeff Teague finished with 20 points and nine assists while Mike Scott added 18 points including four threes off the bench. Antic recorded seven assists to go along with his big three.
Al Jefferson led the Bobcats with 24 points and 23 rebounds. Gerald Henderson added 22 points while Kemba Walker chipped in 16.
This is the first time since 1997 that Atlanta has played in three straight overtime games. There won't be much of an opportunity for rest either, as they are right back at it on Sunday when they take on the Orlando Magic.
