Gustavo Ayon returned to Atlanta on Tuesday to have his injured shoulder examined by team doctors. An MRI exam revealed inflammation and a strained rotator cuff which is expected to sideline him for 4-8 weeks.

Ayon was injured during the first quarter of Monday's preseason opening loss to the Miami Heat. He was injured while battling for a loose ball with Miami's Norris Cole. Ayon immediately grabbed his arm and was escorted to the locker room area by team trainers.

Ayon spent last season with the Orlando Magic and the Milwaukee Bucks. He was acquired by the Hawks during the offseason after Milwaukee placed him on waivers. He was named MVP of the FIBA Americas after leading Mexico to the tournament championship.

Atlanta rebuilt its frontcourt during the offseason and Ayon figures to challenge for playing time behind Al Horford at center. While he is out, Elton Brand and Pero Antic are candidates to backup Horford.
