John Jenkins injury: Hawks guard to sit out first two preseason games

Second-year guard John Jenkins will sit out the Atlanta Hawks' first two exhibition games due to back spasms.

The Atlanta Hawks will be without second-year guard John Jenkins for the first two preseason games due to back spasms.

Jenkins experienced discomfort during Sunday's practice and the team elected to play it safe by leaving him behind as they departed for Miami for Monday's preseason opener.

"We are just being extra cautious and making sure we keep him healthy and take our time," Budenholzer said. "We want to make sure he is OK."

Jenkins told reporters at the team's media day that he was shut down for about two months over the summer due to a small ligament tear that caused a bulging disk. The injury was discovered shortly after Jenkins returned from playing at the Las Vegas Summer League.

Thus far the team doesn't seem to be too concerned about the injury but the fact that it seems to be lingering somewhat is worth keeping an eye on. Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver are expected to start Monday's preseason opener. Jenkins injury could provide the opportunity for Jared Cunningham and David Lighty to see extended minutes.
