Atlanta Hawks Week in Review: Training Camp, Vegas Odds and more

The Atlanta Hawks officially opened preseason camp on Tuesday and are preparing for Monday's exhibition opener against the Miami Heat.

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

This is our last week without real live games as the preseason schedule for the Atlanta Hawks gets underway on Monday in Miami. The team had a busy week beginning with media day and then a three day stay in Athens at the University of Georgia for training camp. Here is a look back in case you missed any of the headlines:

Training Camp officially opens at the University of Georgia

The Atlanta Hawks enjoyed a three-day stay at the University of Georgia where they held five training camp practices over a three-day period. The trip was a homecoming of sorts for a couple of players and Mike Budenholzer was pleased with the things he saw during practice.

"It's been a great camp," Budenholzer said. "I really feel good about what we did up here, putting in the foundation defensively, making that a priority, implementing the beginnings of the offense. I think we put in the seeds of playing unselfishly, playing with discipline, individual effort.

The team reportedly experimented with several different combinations for its second team but its starting group had Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver at the guards, DeMarre Carroll and Paul Millsap at the forward along with Al Horford at the center position.

Hawks, Horford searching for identity - Sekou Smith, Hang Time Blog

"It's weird man," Horford said Monday. "It is. It's hard for me to believe it's my seventh year. I started, we started with a big group of guys here and it's hard for me to believe it's just me from that original group of guys. But it's new and it's exciting, an exciting time for the Hawks."

Schröder represents future for Atlanta Hawks - Lang Greene HOOPSWORLD

"I don't think he's going to have a lot of 20-year-old bumps in the road. He's played professional basketball. He's not scared of anything and I think that is one thing that's going to benefit him. We've had conversations where he's ready to play against the top guards in the league and he looks forward to it."

Millsap gets a fresh start in Atlanta - Alex Kennedy HOOPSWORLD

"We're a smart team," Millsap said. "We're going to know what to do. Our brains are our best asset right now. During the course of the season, we'll figure everything out. With smart guys around, I'm sure [the rookies] will catch on pretty fast. Also, we have a coach who is going to teach and break things down for everyone. Because we have smart and intelligent guys, hopefully it won't take that long [for the group to jell]. We've already been going through some things and we're getting a feel for what we're going to do. It's been working out."

Interestingly head coach Mike Budenholzer isn't one of them despite having ties to the company. If you are interested here is a nice convenient Twitter list that you can follow.
