Hawks vs Mavericks preview: Preseason slate wraps up in Dallas

The Atlanta Hawks close out their preseason schedule Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks will wrap up their preseason schedule Wednesday night in Dallas against the Mavericks. Atlanta is hoping to snap a four-game losing streak while Dallas looks to close out the preseason with a winning record after going 3-3 in their first six games.

The Hawks will be without two starters as both Paul Millsap and Al Horford stayed behind in Atlanta to receive treatment for nagging injuries. Millsap has been battling a sore Achilles while Horford is dealing with hamstring soreness.

Atlanta's preseason to this point can be described as inconsistent. They have shown spurts where they have played well at both ends of the floor but have not been able to sustain it for four quarters. Atlanta's offense has struggled at times to generate points as they have topped 89 just once this preseason. The Hawks have also had lapses defensively and struggled to lock down the perimeter where opponents have shot a high percentage from the three-point range. Indiana made 6-of-12 shots from deep on Tuesday night.

The amount of new faces on the roster combined with having to learn new offensive and defensive systems is a valid reason for the struggles but with the regular season now just a week away, it is time to start fine tuning.

Wednesday's game is the last opportunity to impress the coaching staff for three players who are training camp invites. Royal Ivey and Cartier Martin failed to impress against the Pacers on Tuesday while Eric Dawson hasn't played in the last four games. With Horford and Millsap both out, he could be in line to see some action against the Mavericks. Atlanta will have until Tuesday to cut down their roster to at least 15 players.

John Jenkins made his preseason debut against Indiana, going scoreless in 11 minutes. Barring a setback he could see more playing time Wednesday night.

Atlanta will close the preseason in the same building where they will open the regular season. The Hawks will be right back in Dallas on October 30 to face the Mavericks.

Update: - Kyle Korver (Personal Reasons) did not travel with the team to Dallas and will not play against the Mavericks.
