Atlanta Hawks open training camp practices in Athens

Training camp is officially underway for the Atlanta Hawks and there were little surprises during Day 1 of camp.

The Atlanta Hawks officially began training camp on Tuesday with a pair of practices at the University of Georgia's basketball practice facilities. Most of the first session was closed to the media but reporters were eventually allowed in to watch some of the team scrimmage.

The AJC reports that the first unit featured Kyle Korver at shooting guard with DeMarre Carroll at the small forward position. This is likely the lineup we will see on opening night. The second unit featured Dennis Schroder and John Jenkins in the backcourt with James Johnson, Pero Antic and Elton Brand in the frontcourt.

The AJC's Chris Vivlamore asked Head Coach Mike Budenholzer about Johnson's inclusion with the second group and was told not to read much into it given that it was the first day of camp. However, with Korver at the shooting guard there appears to be a real opportunity for Johnson or Damien Wilkins at the small forward position. Perhaps even both.

Its also worth mentioning that Royal Ivey was working with what appeared to be the third team while Shelvin Mack operated with the fourth team. I expect those two to compete during camp for the third point guard position. Mack is under contract but it is a non-guaranteed deal while Ivey is a training camp invite.

On the injury side of things Lou Williams took part in some non-contact work and Mike Scott sat out the scrimmages after suffering an ankle injury. The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday and will remain in Athens through Thursday before heading back to Atlanta. They will open the preseason schedule on the road on Monday, October 7 in Miami against the World Champions.
